Manton update #10!

Monday, January 24

We almost had a phone call today but ran out of time. Y’all wouldn’t have known it was me because all this coughing has destroyed my voice. It was great to get some real pictures of Mazarine today. I can’t wait to meet her.

We did another PST today at the pool. I somehow knocked 10 seconds off my swim and 6 off my run. I did 1 more pull-up and around 5 less pushups and sit-ups. After that we went and received our second round of shots. Hopefully that second dose of penicillin will get rid of a lot of the sickness.

We should be earning our final flag in 2 weeks. It’s for Captain’s Cup, which is an athletic competition between the 14 divisions in our training group. I’m on the sit-up team (it was a toss up between that and the 12-man / 12-200m lap relay team but there are a good number of guys who are all about the same speed… one of our guys was a junior olympian in the 100m) since I consistently get 110-120 sit-ups on the Navy PFA (different from the SEAL PST which I get 90-100 sit-ups on). My long sentence quota has been met for the week. Anyway, the overall winner gets a flag that no one else can carry during graduation.

No PT tomorrow. We get to sleep until 0530 then take divisional photos for a while and have classes, etc. the rest of the day. Oh yea, we lost a guy today for medical reasons so I get to move racks again.

It seems like the one thing pretty much everyone, myself included, misses the most from the real world is music. All everyone sings around here are marching and running cadences. Did I already talk about this in another letter? I feel like I have.

I was able to get my hands on some salt packets to use with my canteen as a neti pot. I should have enough for at least a week if I ration.

That’s all for now. 0430 reveille for the pool tomorrow.

Wednesday, January 26

First, just to clear it up, when I say they beat us I don’t mean it literally. They just make us do a whooooole lot of body weight workouts at the end of which we are beat down, worn out, etc.

We are finally going to the gas chamber tomorrow. Hopefully it will be fun. I’ve always wanted to experience that stuff. We also have hands-on firefighting Friday and Tuesday which should be fun.

Today during PT in our compartment Chief put on real music. A couple of heavy metal songs came on followed by Paradises City while we were doing team sit-ups.

All right that’s all for now. I’m about to go hygiene and I’m not supposed to be writing right now anyway.

Thursday, January 27

Well today was pretty fun. We started with a tough pool workout involving passing 2 bricks instead of one. While that was going on one person was swimming, doing calisthenics and bear crawls. Eventually we got so spread out that just 5 of us were passing the 2 bricks. That was tough by the third cycle.

The gas chamber was good, I’d like to do it again. I was in the second row so I got to see the group ahead of me go first. When the room first filled with gas it started to burn around my neck because we were told to shave the hour before we got there. I was also at the end right by the source, which is supposedly more concentrated, but I bet the difference is negligible. Anyway, once we took our masks off everything was fine for about 5 seconds, then my eyes started to burn a little and I coughed a bit. About 5 seconds after that my eyes were burning like crazy and I could barely open them. I was coughing pretty hard but I don’t remember it hurting anywhere but my eyes. I had to say my name and division after about 20 seconds and we were released after about a minute. Then we had to walk back to the classroom and sit. That was a little tough because I could barely see, but I kept telling myself to blink like they instructed and after about 5 minutes I was back to normal. I would definitely like to do it again and see how much I can control myself now that I know what to expect.

Friday, January 28

Another slow day. PT was cancelled because of inspection. I got a 5.0 on both parts. Next week we have our second drill inspection, test 3 and *Battle Stations 21, then we are finished.

Time to try to catch up on sleep. I had watch last night.

Saturday, January 29

We drilled in the compartment for a few hours and that always sucks. We had a random RDC in here getting pissed at the sticks a bunch because we weren’t doing it how he does it. So we got beat a little even though we were doing it how we were taught. That reminds me, I’m Stick 3 so at graduation I’ll be the third one from the right if you are facing us.

The divisions above and below us (803 & 805) make us look good inadvertently. One of the guys in 803 got caught with an iPhone the other night. He fell asleep while it was charging. The second in command of 805 was caught sleeping in the shower while everyone else was folding clothes.
